DBCA has advised that permits authorising the Central Wheatbelt Biosecurity Association (CWBA) and Northern Biosecurity Group (NBG) to undertake wild dog control on affected DBCA managed lands ceased on 30 June 2026, following a decision by the Yamatji Nation Joint Management Body not to renew the permits.
The decision affects more than 340,000 hectares of DBCA managed land within and adjacent to the Shires of Dalwallinu, Morawa and Perenjori inside the State Barrier Fence. This includes Karara Rangelands, Buntine Nature Reserve, Weelhamby Reserve, Bowgada Reserve, Jibberding UCL, Goorly Lakes UCL, Hollywell Road UCL and several Unallocated Crown Land (UCL) timber reserves within the CWBA region, as well as Barnong Nature Reserve and the former Barnong Pastoral Lease in the NBG region, which borders properties in the Shire of Morawa.
CWBA is deeply concerned about the potential impacts of this decision and is actively engaging with DBCA, DPIRD, neighbouring Recognised Biosecurity Groups and other stakeholders to understand how effective wild dog management will be maintained on these lands into the future.
Under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007, all landholders and land managers have responsibilities for managing declared pests on land under their control. While CWBA supports coordinated landscape-scale pest management programs, these responsibilities remain with individual land managers.
There are currently no changes to CWBA coordinated wild dog control activities on private land. We will continue working with landholders, government agencies and other stakeholders to support effective wild dog management across the region.
CWBA encourages landholders to increase monitoring for signs of wild dog activity and ensure they hold current Restricted Pesticide Permits for the use of 1080, strychnine and leg hold traps so control measures can be implemented promptly if required.
